My first sweater.
The Fall 2010 Knit Simple cover pattern is perfect for my first sweater. The front, back, and sleeves are knit flat then seamed together. The neck is picked up the knit in the round in a simple ribbing. It's bulky yarn done on bigger needles in simple garter stitch which means it'll knit up fast. See? Perfect for my first sweater attempt.
Now I have the fun of picking out yarn, which will include a trip to Webs this upcoming weekend. I need 1120 yards of whichever bulky weight yarn I choose. I'm leaning toward a merino/alpaca mix, but I'll definitely need to feel it before I buy because I have a tendency to break out in hives with many wools. Usually the alpaca mixes are okay, but better safe than sorry. Besides, who doesn't want to spend an afternoon feeling all sorts of soft and squishy yarns?
My top choice yarn is the Ornaghi Filati Optical in 207-Brown/Natural (left). Then there's Webs' own Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky in Oatmeal (center). If neither of those yarns work out (and I think they will) I'll try the Reynolds Olé-Olé cotton blend in beige (right) as a last choice.

Yarn like strawberries.
Yesterday, driving along some road in Beverly, I saw a bunch of knit stuff hanging from a line in front of a teeny-tiny house. Then I saw the sign reading Yarns in the Farms. "Yarn," I screamed. "YARN!" This place is gorgeous! It's exactly what I always wanted from a LYS. The inside is like this magical little house full of yarn and knitted things.
While I was there, I could not resist buying one skein of Aruacania Azapa in 806. It looks like strawberries! Right now I'm busily knitting f. pea's quickie cowl with it.
This yarn is gorgeous. It feels like heaven and knits like a dream. When I put it on next winter I'm going to feel happy every single time I wear it.
The pattern is fun, and really simple. My sister picked out some yarn she wants me to "do something" with for her--this is my family's new thing--and I think she's going to get one of these cowls next Christmas.

Flat Feet Yarn from Conjoined Creations. White yarn is machine knit into 12" squares. Pairs of knit blanks (as they call them) are then dyed to order in combinations of colorway and intensity for a total of twelve choices. You knit the sock directly from the blank, just unravel the edge and go. Because the blanks are hand-painted each sock is an individual work of art. (80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon. Size 2-3 US needles recommended.)
Polartec Fleece! Polartec YarnDots!
Today I discovered that Polartec makes yarn: PolarKnit. I think this would be an excellent yarn to make a cowl, mittens, and hat or calorimetry for my sister to wear while running in the cold weather. It's 100% Polartec Wind Pro polarfleece and comes in seven colors: Leap Frog, Mermaid, Carrot, Mallard, Deep Red, Black, Pink and Purple.
Not only do they make yarn, they make YarnDots. Cute little buttons to stick into your bulky knit items. I want to get the crocheting one for my mom and the knitting ones for myself.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.
I am addicted to Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn and to the washcloths and dishcloths I can make with it. I have eight colors in my stash and four more on order right now.
It's mindless knitting with yarn that runs through my fingers softly and smoothly. The tiny little stockinette stitches done on size seven needles look so neat and feel so good.
You'd think from all this raving that I've made some of these for me, but I haven't. Not yet. These are for the baby-to-be, and I have many in the works for family: skully cloths for my godson, a martini in key lime for my mother, and a penguin for my sister.
